Abstract

For some years now, given the prominence that new electronic formats and their associated channels have been acquiring, many CSIC librarians have had to "relocate". Both Enredadera and our List of Libraries have at some point shown aspects related to this: more users in the Centers and Institutes but less and less physically present in our facilities.
In our Library and Documentation Support Unit of the Experimental Station of Aula Dei (Z-EEAD) we became aware of all this. We understood that it was a priority to maintain a "worthy Library website" that would be able to adequately collect and offer all the digital services and products provided by the Organization. We had to guarantee efficient and integrated channels for what was most in demand by our scientific users: obtaining accurate and relevant information in real time. But, at the same time, we were also aware of our loss of visibility: it was necessary to implement complementary strategies that would allow the Library to maintain a certain prominence in the new digital environment. Thus, we began to consider integrating, as part of the services offered to our users, training activities in relation to the new digital services and products, and also, when the opportunity arose, in a complementary but irregular manner, to extract qualitative aspects of our collections through exhibitions. Search for visibility, search for new opportunities for contact with users, strategy to enhance the value of the existing Library in balanced contrast to the current prominence of digital. Making the Library a meeting place again... These new objectives did not seem easy, they always required effort, but above all they represented a new challenge and new activities to justify our role in the Institute. As a result of this vision, we began to organize an activity project to be carried out within the framework of the Science Week CSIC in Aragon 2007 called "Scientific publications as a preferential way of transmission and knowledge of the results of scientific activity". The final proposal contemplated an activity conceived as an online Exhibition + Workshop, with two different areas for this purpose. In one of the areas, a guided and explained tour of the publications on display was possible, supported by documentation and biographies, showing the evolution from the 18th to the 20th century. In another, with suitably connected computers, participants were allowed to experience, under supervision, what it is really like today to control scientific bibliographic production and obtain digital documents.
