Abstract

Although the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas (CIB) was solemnly inaugurated in 1958, the libraries that contributed so much to the scientific training of the best pool of researchers in Biology and Biomedicine in Spain, have gone through very different and complicated stages to constitute the current CIB Library. Its collections cover an uncommon multiplicity of subjects, coinciding with the lines of research of the numerous groups that were integrated into the center. To understand this fact, it must be taken into account that the CIB, since its creation in 1950, at the request of Marañón, Albareda and other prestigious scientists of the time scattered throughout CSIC Centers and Universities, was the nucleus that brought together established researchers and promising young people who, with their vocation, enthusiasm and tenacity, managed to give it an unquestionable prestige at an international level. In 1956, the S. Ramón y Cajal Institute, the Jaime Ferrán Institute and the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology moved to the emblematic building built by Fisac on Velázquez Street.
