The history of our library is closely linked to that of the Marine Research Institute to which it belongs. The Marine Research Institute and, therefore, the library, were created in 1951 as a Coastal Laboratory dependent on the Fisheries Research Institute of Barcelona, from which it would not be separated until 1978, when, as an independent centre, it took the name of the Fisheries Research Institute of Vigo, adopting its current name in 1986.
