Abstract

Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a non-profit organisation that has developed a unique identifier for authors of scientific papers. This initiative, supported by major publishers (Nature Publishing Group, Elsevier...) and research institutions (CERN, MIT, CalTech...), aims to ensure not only the unequivocal distinction of the scientific and technical production of researchers, as it allows the integration of the IDs of other bibliographic databases (Scopus, Wos...), but also their API; it guarantees a correct interaction between the various information retrieval systems of all the agents involved, becoming an effective method in the transfer of data between systems, such as integration with the staff directories of institutions, with the bibliographic databases of publishers, CRIS and institutional repositories, funding agencies, CV evaluation tools and competitive calls. In this way, not only are confusions related to the authorship of research activities carried out by different researchers with matching or similar personal names avoided, but data interoperability is also very useful.
