Abstract

In September 2015, the United Nations approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and a clear call was made for the involvement of the actors of the global research and innovation system. Libraries can and should play a relevant role in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda. In particular, Target 10 of Goal 16 aims to "Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements." This goal aligns naturally with the mission of libraries as institutions that guarantee access to information. The article reviews through several initiatives how open access repositories are very well positioned to become leading providers of open access research results that investigate and propose solutions to the major societal challenges posed by the 2030 Agenda.
