Abstract

Europeana is a European Commission project initiated in 2008, whose main objective is to be a joint access point to the images of cultural heritage held in libraries, archives, museums and other cultural institutions of EU countries for greater integration and mutual knowledge. The birth of this initiative is based on previous actions of the European Union, since in 2005 the so-called i2010 strategy was approved in which the digital libraries initiative was included; since 2007, the European Digital Library Network (EDLnet) defined the prototype with funding from the EU. With the Digital Agenda for Europe, in force until 2020, the Europeana funding system was established, which has meant its consolidation as a project, which will continue in the Horizon2020 framework program; currently, the development and management are entrusted to the Europeana Foundation.
